Concordia Lighthouse competition

Matterbetter, concorso internazionale d'architettura

Isola del Giglio, Italia

Il progetto è stato selezionato tra i migliori, di seguito la presentazione del concept: What is the future of the lighthouse? Despite all the complex themes concerning the image of the lighthouse, the answer is as easy as the question, direct and extremely provocative: simply none. None because the lighthouses is only the melancholic vision of a romantic past, the naÏve stereotype of ocean seaside. None, because every useless building we project is an unfading scar on earth face, it is no more time to create things which are just beautiful, beauty nowadays is the supreme consequence of mere utility. Both the lighthouse and the Concordia are destined to leave Just Memories preserved by the endless sea and the roaring waves, which impart movement to the light, inside the heap of lighthouse's rubbles, let free to rotate on its axis. Light beams are alternately generated by the light conveyed to the surface of the heap by 32 steel tubes, symbolizing the victims of the Concordia's tragedy; the Point Absorber System ensure the required energy to the light thanks to the waves movement. The architecture although is not projected to last forever: every stone, every single rusty piece of metal, every human trace will be swallowed again by the nature as a new part of an everlasting ecosystem.
